Coaching Session to improve first touch and passing

Coach Ahmed Shakir (Shakitte) has recently won the best coach of the Under 21 Tournament. He is no stranger to Maldives Football. Shakitte has played for the likes of Eagles, Victory and Youth. Injuries limited his playing career. He is more than making up for it with his career in coaching. He is the first coach to win three consecutive youth tournaments. Trusted assistant of coach Ihusaan (Saanthi), Shakitte has worked with Club Eagles and junior National teams.

We are proud to bring you one of his coaching sessions.

Aim:

To improve first touch and passing

Set-up: (as shown in the diagram)

Equipment: 

Cones, markers and footballs

Players:

3 players per group

*  This session has been divided into three variations

VARIATION 1

Instructions:

  • The player from outside starts
  • the player in the 2m box receives the ball
  • his first touch should send the ball outside the box as shown and passes the ball back to the first player
  • moves back into the box and receives the ball from the other player
  • after ten passes change the player in the middle

VARIATION 2

(for this variation only one ball is used)

  • the ball is passed to the player in the middle
  • he receives the ball with a turn within the grid, he is now ready to pass to the player on the other side
  • the third player receives the ball and passes the ball back to the player in the middle
  • repeat

VARIATION 3

  • one of the outside players start the drill, passes to the player in the center and runs to the center
  • the player in the center receives out side the 2m box and dribbles to the empty cone area left by the passer
  • the new player in the center receives the ball from the other side
  • repeat

Use different techniques. Outside foot, inside foot, left foot, right foot etc.

PROGRESSION:

  • use one of the first touch techniques for a relay
  • make it competetive
  • first group to complete ten perfect passes win
