Blues surrender top spot to Bengaluru

A goal deep into injury time was enough for Bengaluru FC as they moved to top of the AFC Cup group E and are now three points clear of Blues with nine points. New Radiant have six points and sit second.

With a single team advancing into the inter zone semi finals New Radiant's chances of a knockout stage trip may have faded away.

Nishu Kumar slotted the ball into the back of net in the 91st minute of the game. Initially Ahmed Abdulla (lily) looses the ball and a Bengaluru midfielder plays a through ball for Sunil Chetri. The Blues defender's stood frozen in the with their hands in the air but the Linesmen's flag did not go up and Sunil was through on goal. Ali Fasir was Blues last player but as Sunil closed in on the Blues penalty area Fasir gave up his pursuit in fear of commiting a foul. Blues goalie Imran was quick to close down on Sunil but Nishu was all by himself and Sunil passed the ball for Nishu home put away the ball into a empty net.

New Radiant dominated possession and had more attempts on goal but failed to have a shot on target. When the Blues strikers did have a chance to shoot they tried to find a team-mate in the box with a cross or a through ball and hesitated to shoot most notably Ali Ashfaq and Guillem Martim.

Hamza Mohamed did try to move the ball around and find team-mates in promising position and during the second half he freed out right full back Akram Abdul Ghanee on many occasions but Akram's cross were below par.

Even when New Radiant tried to open up Bengaluru defense it did not work out. They lacked cutting edge up front and failed to find the rhythm they had. Blues have not played the fast attacking football they played last season and this year it's a more cautions approach with most of the ball being played at the back and midfield.

Next up is for Blues is the return fixture against Bengaluru on the 25th of April at home. Anything less than a win in the return leg for New Radiant would mean their AFC campaign will be over.
